About 140 million years ago, a series of violent volcanic activities occurred in what is now Hong Kong. During this period, a giant volcano of over 20km in diameter was situated in the region now known as Sai Kung. This huge volcano had a series of eruptions, ejecting a huge amount of volcanic ash and lava.
These formed the distinctive and dramatic islands that you see today. Over time the hollowed-out volcano collapsed and subsided forming a caldera. Sharp Island was once at the edge of this huge caldera and is a modern reminder of the natural events of the ancient tmes that created Hong Kong.
We explore the inner islands of Shelter Bay from Sai Kung beach. The two main islands we visit are Sharp & Kau Sai Chau. Our journey takes us over coral reefs (we snorkel there), through sandy mangroves, to deserted beaches for a swim and relaxation. Includes lunch.

This is an easy sea kayak trip that takes you into the supervolcano caldera that created this amazing UNESCO Global Geopark. The journey is approximately 12 km in length (depending on weather and ocean conditions it may be shorter).
We meet at 10 am where we get changed into our sea kayaking gear, have a quick briefing, and move the kayaks onto the ocean.
There is a 15-minute practice paddle to get used to controlling your kayak before we head off for our first island stop, the historically important Yin Tim Tsai. Here we take our first break in the mangrove systems that adjoin the ancient salt fields, used by the Hakka nation to sell salt to make gunpowder and fireworks.
After leaving Yin Tim Tsai, we paddle through a traditional floating village before crossing to our lunch beach on Sharp Island, the rim of the ancient supervolcano. For those who wish to, we snorkel over an impressive coral reef, before taking a break for lunch.
After lunch, we either circumnavigate the island if the weather and ocean conditions are suitable or follow the coast of Sharp Island back to Sai Kung, with a brief stop at Bar Beach Island.
